Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

My mother was a traveler.  In fact, it was she who put the traveling gene in me.  I was seven years old, just celebrated my birthday a few months before, when she, my step-father, sister and aunt, packed up our battered up car and headed for California.  I can’t imagine what my grandmother was going through.  Not only were we all leaving her nest, but halfway across the world, too.

I don’t even remember the day I met my step-father but he was a mean man.  He started off okay, wanted my sister and I to call him daddy, the whole nine yards, but boy was he mean.  He’d take a belt to your bare butt in a heartbeat.  I really don’t think I was that bad of a kid, but I do remember over time, my butt must have toughened up as they didn’t hurt as much as the first few go arounds.

I digress because I wanted you to get a little background of this Beverly Hills family (minus the riches) straight out of the back woods and heading for tinsel town and beyond.  My mother always wanted to be a movie star.  She was a dead ringer for Marilyn Monroe (someday I’ll have to scan a picture to show you).  The same sultry looks, the hair, the whole nine yards.  Betty Crocker and Leave it to Beaver’s mom she wasn’t, but I loved her love for travel and excitement.

She hated the Eastern Shore so when she fell in love with a young man from Rhode Island who had joined the Army and got orders to Fort Ord, California, she jumped on it.  How long did it take her to throw her kids and belongings in the car?  Wasn’t long.

The trip to California was long but the memories even as a seven-year-old will remain with me forever.  I’ve often thought about going back to Cali.  Visit the old homestead (house is gone but street is still there), walk the path I walked going back and forth to school each day, visit the library (Buena Vista Library) which used to be the old school (Abraham Lincoln Elementary) (picture below).

Buena_Vista_Library_2

But when I think of Cali, I think of my mother and how she had these dreams.  My dreams are happening now, but she was always looking, searching and I really don’t think ever finding.  She wanted to be a movie star as I mentioned earlier and when that didn’t happen, she tried it with me.  I grew up with Shirley Temple curls but no dimples.  Cute as a button but no inclination to memorize words and be in front of an audience.  She was the star, I was the wardrobe person.

When my aunt decided Cali life wasn’t for children, she decided to slip out in the middle of the night and board my sister and I on a train and head back to Virginia leaving my mother behind.  I didn’t find out until about 30 years later exactly what happened but it was something she had to do for us, so she told me.

I missed my mother terribly.  I waited and waited for my precious mother to come get me.  But she never came.  Like I said, she hated the Eastern Shore.

I remember sitting on my grandmother’s front stoop as they called it back then (basically meant a bunch of cinder blocks piled on top of each other to create a landing).  I would stare off into into the quiet street out front, hoping one day she’d be pulling into the driveway.  I felt very alone back then even though I had my sister and my grandmother just loved us to pieces and was so happy we were back.

Eventually my mother did return.  Alone.  No husband anymore, just the clothes on her back and what little else she had were stuffed in an overnight bag.  But she was back.  I never knew the circumstances. I never knew why she let my aunt take us so far away from her.  I never knew why she didn’t come back to get us.  Until thirty years later when my aunt revealed to me our family’s secret.  My step-father got angry and called social services and they were coming for us in the morning.

But today isn’t about me.  It’s about my two beautiful grown kids who see a mother who has found her dreams.  Finding your dreams does not mean riches.  Finding your dreams does not mean it’s the end to finding happiness.  Finding happiness is found within and it is through me my children find strength to beat whatever trials come their way.

To you, Mother, for helping me find my path in a weird kinda way.

Surviving in Japan: List of bloggers blogging in Japan

It’s been 4 days since the horrific disaster in Japan.  We’ve been in front of the TV watching how the 3rd leading economic country in the world got hit first with the 9.0 earthquake, then the tsunami, and now they’re waiting to see what’s going to happen to the nuclear reactors.  It’s a nightmare unfolding before our eyes, but what possibly can the Japanese or expats living over there be going through right now?

I’m compiling a list of bloggers in Japan. If you know of anyone or you want to be added to this list please leave a comment and I’ll gladly add you.  For all the others, leave a comment on their blogs to let them know you care.

Earthquake Disaster in Japan

I feel so shallow.  Yesterday, Japan got hit by not only an earthquake, but a tsunami, too, and I’m upset over missing American Idol.  I heard something about it but I was so wrapped up in my own dish network hating world that I didn’t realize how bad it was over there until I turned on the news, the first time I’ve watched TV since I couldn’t get American Idol anymore (until Dish Network gives us our local stations back).

It was beyond comprehensible…I could see the devastation but my brain wasn’t comprehending.  Those cars and ships look like toys, surely this isn’t real.  Immediately, I remembered my first cousin, Al Maige (we called him Alfie) over there and for the life of me I couldn’t find his mother’s phone number.  So, I did what I do best – searched for him on the Internet, namely Facebook.  And found him here.  And he’s fine.  Here’s what he reported back to me at Facebook: Yes, we are all fine. I live in an unaffected area; about 25 miles inland. Still can believe it came in 6 miles! Unheard of. Thanks again for the support.” I’m not even sure if he knew who I was being as I’ve not talked to him in years.  The last I heard was that he was in the Navy, found a Japanese girl to marry and decided to make a home in Japan. I think he’s still in the Navy, but not sure.

Back to the disaster,  here’s a blogger living in Japan:

As I find more bloggers in Japan, I’ll add them.

Sending prayers to the citizens of Japan!

It makes you realize how vulnerable anyone living near the water can be.  If we ever had a tsunami on the east coast, we’re gone.  I mean the whole Eastern Shore.  Gone.  Living on Chincoteague which is an island off the Virginia coastline makes me very worried.

Until next time, wavinghand

American Idol Recap March 9 2011Performances

I blogged this morning  about the beef I’m having with WAVY-10 and Dish Network, but I did find a recap of what I missed on American Idol last night:

I really don’t know how long I can do this.  This was the first show I missed this season and I have been a fan of the show for years.  All because of a stupid disagreement.  As you can see by the video, recaps aren’t quite like curling up on your couch with your pooch perched across your chest for a whole hour of sheer bliss.  This video took perhaps 5 minutes to watch.  But on AmericanIdol.com where I found this video, I also found videos of all the performers.  Below are my favorite top 5 performances:

CASEY ABRAMS

Although not my very favorite, this guy certainly rocks!

JAMES DURBIN

James Durbin wasn’t my favorite early on but my god the more I listen to him, the more I am astounded at how great he is!

PAUL MCDONALD

This was my favorite from early on.  His voice was so different and I figured he’d end up in the top 10.  I didn’t think last night’s performance was as good as in the past, but of all the contestants, he’s still in my top 5.

PIA TOSCANO

Pia never really stood out but after last night’s performance, she just made it into my top 5.

Scotty McCreery

Scott McCreery has been my all favorite number one from day one.  Even if he doesn’t win, he’ll get a contract.

If you’re having an American Idol withdrawal, too, watch all the performances here.

Until next time, wavinghand

Dear WAVY-10 & Dish Network

Dear WAVY-10 & Dish Network,

Okay, I’m pissed.  I don’t know what is going on with you guys that you can’t work something out, but I want you to know that I am royally pissed.  I’m super busy.  I mean super duper busy and I know you don’t care about anyone especially because you’re both so very busy too, but I have a big complaint.  Because I am super busy, I don’t have time for much TV, but the one time I make time is when my favorite show, American Idol, comes on.  Don’t laugh, I’m not the only one who is feeling very deprived right now.  But I know neither of you care because it’s all about money to you guys.  I’m paying over a $100 now for satellite.  That’s almost half a car payment for an older used model.  That’s 1/4 of what I spend on groceries a month.  That’s a lot to pay for one damn television show.  I would at least like to watch that one damn television show.  For you, Dish Network, it’s not enough to offer us Encore for a year free.  Have you seen the movies that you have listed coming up?  Come on now.  Give us at least some new movies.  How long has it been since Sleepless in Seattle came out?  You also are guaranteeing our rates won’t go up for 2 years.  Does that mean you’re not even going to budge so that we can have Fox back?  Do you have any plans to find another station that carries Fox?  Do you think we are going to sit by and  take this with a grain of salt?  This is so ridiculous.  And yes I have considered going to cable because of this.  Get something worked out or someone is going to lose a lot of customers.  And you, LIN Media, what in the hell do you think you’re doing?  Why does it always have to be about money?

I’m not happy.

– An Unsatisfied Dish Network customer

Okay, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, from what I can understand of it, WAVY-10 which airs the Fox Network, wanted a 140% rate increase from Dish Network and Dish decided to decline their offer and shut them down.  LIN Media which owns the local television stations says their stations are invaluable and it would be a disservice to Dish Network subscribers for Dish not to go along with the price hike.  According to Dish, they believed their customers were paying enough money and refused to budge.  So off went WAVY-10 and along with it, Fox Network.  Here’s the official report here.

According to one complaint, “Dish can broadcast the NBC and Fox broadcasts from another market.”  If that is true, why aren’t they trying to do this for us?

Yesterday, I found a letter from Dish Network in my mail box.  Without mentioning one word about WAVY-10, they are offering us a one year free supply of Encore movies.  Plus, they are saying they promise their rates won’t go up for 2 years.  There it is in writing, so I’m presuming it is what it is.  I took a look at that list of movies.  Nothing I haven’t already seen or never plan to see.  I’m happy to hear they are happy with my $110 a month and won’t be raising it.  How much higher can they raise it, for God’s sake?

My suggestion is this.  Since I won’t be getting Fox anymore to watch the one damn show I watched on it, then lower my bill OR find another Fox network provider because if you don’t,  I’ll be finding another dish or cable provider.

What’s on your ‘Bucket List’ of places you want to go before you die?

The Bucket ListInteresting blog post I read this morning.  Seems there’s a movie out on DVD and BluRay Disc called The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman (two of my most favorite actors!) in which they make a list of things to do before they die.

In Yahoo News today, Bill Clinton was talking about his own list of things to do before he kicks the bucket including having grandchildren and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro before the snow melts (which is supposed to happen in the next 20 years).

While I have achieved most of my to do list wants, where travel is concerned there are a few places I feel it’s a necessary must to go to or return to.

#1 Burbank, California

Burbank, California, is at the top of my list and the reasons are very personal.  I used to live there years ago as a wee child but unexpectedly I had to leave to go live with my grandmother 3,000 miles away on the east coast.  I’ve almost gotten back there several times, then something comes up and I had to cancel the trip, but the heart yearns to go back and clear up a few things.

#2 Sedona, Arizona

Let me tell you..if there ever was a place that would turn me on more than anything, it’s Sedona, Arizona, for it’s spiritual healing. I’ve never been to a vortex but people tell me they definitely feel a difference in the air.

#3 Grand Canyon

I have never been to the Grand Canyon.  I have lived in Burbank California, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and have traveled to Quebec, Canada, so there’s not much of this country I haven’t seen and then some, but somehow, I’ve always missed the Grand Canyon.

#4 Palm Springs

I have no idea why Palm Springs, California, is one of the places I feel I need to go before I die, but I’m picturing renting a beautiful house with a pool out back with lots and lots of cactus with lights surrounding the pool and of course palm trees (I have a secret cactus and palm tree fetish). And the sunsets would be spectacular against the backdrop of the mountains!

#5 Las Vegas, Nevada

The lights, the action, the close proximity to California (grin) are all only a part of the reason why I have to see Las Vegas, Nevada, before I die.  Okay, the casinos, too, as much as I hate to admit it.  The last time I played the slots was in Harrington, Delaware, and I walked out $500 in the hole.  Never went back and I love those one armed bandits.  Give me a trip to Vegas and I can’t guarantee my will power will hold out!

#6 St. Croix, Virgin Islands

Okay, I’m one of  two million people who would die to visit St. Croix but my reasons are those balmy ocean breezes, cute cabana boys and an island getaway suited to my tastes!

#7 Washington, D.C.

Am I the only one who hasn’t been inside the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.???  Oh and the White House!

#8 New York

Not just New York, but Manhattan!  I’ve actually been there once but it was on a tour bus.  This time I’d like to take a few friends (or family) and go see it on my own time.  I’d walk Central Park, watch a show at NBC Studio in Rockefeller Center and stay in one of those luxury hotels on Broadway and I just might take a boat ride out to the Statue of Liberty and just stare at her.

#9  Disney World, Orlando, Florida

Yeah, yeah, I guess I’m the only one who hasn’t been to Disney World, either!  I lived in Fort Lauderdale for awhile and never got over there even once.

#10 Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Being a mountain lover, I would LOVE to see the Rockies!

So, how about you?  Do you have a Bucket List of places to go before you die?
Until next time, wavinghand

The long and winding roads of old…

road trip 2One of the really neat things about starting this blog is that I can finally mingle with like-minded individuals like myself who consider the open road an old friend, whether they are galavanting around the world or finding unusual places to visit right in their own neighborhood.

Another neat thing about starting this blog is that I also have a chance to remember old roads – roads I’ve traveled and will probably travel again and will probably be writing about them, too, I’m sure.  But it’s those old roads you remember that started a lifelong craving to pack up that suitcase and not let the door hit you in the face on the way out.

I have loved to travel ever since my mother decided she was going to hitch up with my step-dad who had just joined the Army and had orders to California.  Can you imagine being a seven-year-old kid going to California?

I mean, we’re not talking a state or two away, we’re talking all the way across the country.  From the Atlantic to the Pacific, my step-father drove us.  Took us a whole week back then, but it was because of that one trip that I knew I was destined to see the world and I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me I couldn’t.

Right now I’m basically keeping my traveling destinations in the U.S., but who knows what the future brings.  I’m anxious to get going.  My feet are getting antsy and my suitcase is calling my name.

So this is what this blog is about.  Or what I’m about depending how you want to look at it.
